May 2, 2017, Fort Dodge, IA-  The Fort Dodge Community School District is pleased to announce its students and employees of the month for May.  This program recognizes one elementary, one middle school and one high school student, as well as one staff member monthly for exceeding expectations.

Ashlyn Wills is the Elementary Student of the Month. She was nominated by Rick Halligan. Halligan said Wills gives 100 percent effort in everything she does.  She is not afraid of challenges and goes above and beyond with her work.  Halligan appreciates her work ethic and willingness to ask for help when she needs it.  He stated she takes pride in all she does.  He commented that she is a friend to everyone and is always willing to help others in need. Wills follows the 4 Bs and exhibits good character.  He concluded by saying, “Ashlyn is a wonderful student and even better person.  There is nothing false about this young lady.  She not only represents herself well, but Cooper and the entire District as well.” She is the daughter of Mark and Melissa Wills.

Jacy Daniel is the Middle School Student of the Month. She was nominated by her team teachers and peers.  They said Daniel works hard in class and works with teachers when she is confused because she cares about her learning. She tries her hardest and puts her best effort into every class she has.  She is helpful to other students, respectful to her peers and has a good attitude.  They said Daniel always has a smile on her face and helps others when she notices something is wrong.  Her classmates said she is kind, honest, funny and caring.  They concluded by saying, “Jacy is a great model of what a Dodger should be.  Her teachers and peers appreciate having her on our team.  She stands out as a student who is caring and kind to all.” She is the daughter of Brett and Carrie Daniel.

Shelby Louk is the High School Student of the Month. She was nominated by Jennifer Lyman.  She said Louk has consistently remained focused on going above and beyond expectations regarding her coursework. She has dedicated herself to being successful in online programs over the past three years. Louk has also stepped outside her comfort zone and participated in new educational experiences, specifically project-based learning. This has helped her develop her collaborative skills. She is always willing to work with others and often volunteers to help other students.  Lyman said in the three years she has worked with Louk she has shown immense growth as a student and person. This is evident by her work to organize the Mental Health Awareness walk the past two years. Lyman concluded by saying, “Through her involvement in school and community activities, Shelby represents Fort Dodge Senior High extremely well by following through with her commitments and being dependable. She has been a joy to work with over the past three years and her teachers could not be more proud of her and how far she has come.” She is the daughter of Mindy Simmons.

Jen Cole is the Employee of the Month.  She was nominated by Stacey Cole. She stated Cole has gone above and beyond to help our media centers become so much more than they ever were before, establishing Maker Spaces in most of our elementary buildings and making sure to build the capacity of the elementary paras by taking them to another district to see Maker Space prior to implementing them here. These spaces are a place where students are learning to be risk takers, creators and innovators.  She said Cole’s focus this year has been on building the capacity of staff to multiply the work accomplished by helping all teachers help themselves. Her work has helped teachers and students broaden their understanding of how media centers enhance lives and bridge into so many other areas.  S. Cole concluded by saying, “Jen is not looking for credit or the spotlight but instead is the epitome of good character and kindness.  She truly believes books will bring endless possibilities to our students and she works tirelessly to ensure they have experiences and opportunities to broaden their worlds. I am grateful Jen joined our Dodger team as she has been a blessing to Fort Dodge.”
