FDMS Students Deliver Meals on Wheels
February 7, 2020, Fort Dodge, IA- Students in Cindy Griggs’ classroom at Fort Dodge Middle School are learning the importance of helping others. The class has taken on delivering Meals on Wheels this year. Meals on Wheels is a program dedicated to addressing senior isolation and hunger. Volunteers visit with the seniors while delivering nutritious meals.
According to Griggs, the class chose Meals on Wheels for their project because they wanted to help the community and residents.
“The kids are learning that some people in our community are unable to shop and cook for themselves or get out of their homes due to disabilities and that these individuals rely on help from others,” Griggs said. “It’s important for our students to learn they can help others.”
She continued, “Quite often, our students with disabilities are on the other end of the receiving chain, it’s great for them to have an opportunity to be part of the ‘giving chain’.”
All 15 students in her classroom have the opportunity to participate. Typically, six students help each day.
The students enjoy the experience, saying things like, “It’s fun and we get to help people” and “I like to do it because it’s helping out the community”.
