February 23, 2014

February 23, 2014, Fort Dodge, IA-  Fort Dodge Senior High bowling coach, Don Ervin, was selected by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union to receive a Distinguished Coach Award.

The Distinguished Coach Award is given to individuals who have seen a successful career in coaching while making notable contributions toward their school, community and the coaching profession.  The award will be presented during the 2A State Bowling Tournament February 25 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.  He is only the second bowling coach to ever receive the award.

"I appreciate this award very much,” Ervin stated.  “In all my years of coaching this is far, far beyond my wildest dreams."

"We are extremely proud of Don and all that he has done for bowling for FDSH and the entire Fort Dodge community,” said Matt Elsbecker, FDSH Athletic Director.  “His generosity is unmatched.”

Ervin began bowling at the age of 10.  Upon graduating in 1957, he continued to bowl throughout and after his military career. He started his coaching career in 1976, coaching girls 6th grade basketball, and has coached a variety of sports at all age levels ever since.  He began coaching the Fort Dodge Dodgers Bowling Team six years ago, at its inception, and has led both the boys and/or girls to state bowling qualifications every year.  He has received several awards throughout the years, including the Iowa Bowling Coaches Association District Coach of the Year in 2012 and the CIML Boys Coach of the Year, also in 2012.

Don has been married for 49 years to his beautiful wife Karen. They have two children, Dan and Niccole. He has been blessed with their support over the years in his coaching endeavors. Niccole is now one of his assistant coaches and she has helped lead the girls’ team to a 10-0 record heading into state qualifying play. Ervin said that he is truly happy because his family has stood beside him with all of the early mornings, late games and phone calls.
