FDSH Leadership Class Spearheads "Operation Sandy"
November 5, 2012, Fort Dodge, IA- The FDSH Fundamentals of Leadership Class is putting what they’ve learned about service leadership this trimester into practice through “Operation Sandy.”
“Operation Sandy” is a fundraising effort being organized by the class to benefit the Red Cross in order to assist the people on the east coast affected by Hurricane Sandy. Tyler Vaughn, a student in the class came up with the idea while watching news coverage of the recent tragedy.
“After seeing pictures of people out east who’ve lost everything, I thought here’s an opportunity to do something,” Vaughn said. “The class decided we wanted to raise funds to help with relief efforts.”
Activities are being planned throughout the school district. On Thursday, November 8, staff will have the opportunity to wear jeans by giving a $5 donation to the cause. Students at FDSH will participate in a hat day on Friday, November 9, by donating $2 to wear a hat to school. In addition, a “split the pot” raffle is being planned for the high school. Students in the class used skills they’ve learned to contact the principals in the elementary and middle schools to see how they can involve those students as well.
Members of the class are also asking businesses and organizations to donate to the relief efforts. Each student in the class is expected to contact a minimum of three businesses for donations.
“It’s incredible to see the enthusiasm the entire class has for this project that can help such a large number of people in our country during this devastating time,” stated Andi Adams, Fundamentals of Leadership Instructor. “I’m so proud of the kids for wanting to help.”
Anyone wanting to contribute to “Operation Sandy” can drop off a donation at the high school office by November 16. For additional information email email@example.com or contact Megan Gibson at 515.570.7183.
