FDSH Seniors can Obtain National Career Readiness Certificate
April 26, 2013, Fort Dodge, IA- Fort Dodge Senior High (FDSH), in collaboration with the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance (GFDGA) and Iowa Workforce Development is taking another step to prepare students for life after high school. On Wednesday, May 1, FDSH seniors will be offered the opportunity to earn the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
The NCRC is designed to measure an individual’s skills in the areas of applied mathematics, reading for information and locating information. The Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze NCRC is awarded based on an individual’s scores in these core areas.
According to Lynnae Harvey, FDSH counselor, earning the NCRC benefits both students who are headed directly into the workplace as well as those pursuing a college education. The testing and results help students with their career decisions by giving them an understanding of the skills needed for various job categories.
The NCRC delivers immediate benefits to students including
· Matching their workplace skills to the skills employers need and want
· Showing employers concrete documentation of their skills
· Standing out from other candidates who lack credentials
· Demonstrating their commitment to succeed
· Identifying workplace skills they need to further develop
After earning the NCRC, students can set up an online account that allows employers to verify their credentials. Students can also showcase their accomplishment by including information about their NCRC on their resumes and job applications. Currently thousands of employers around the country, including approximately 75 in central Iowa, recognize the value of the NCRC and rely on it to verify the skills of applicants.
Kelly Halsted, Economic Development Director with the GFDGA said, “The NCRC is a win-win-win. It’s allows the worker to be able to showcase their skills and the employer to assure that employees have the right skill sets for a position. And it helps the community by proving we have a talented workforce to fill current and future jobs.”
