First Annual Fort Dodge Choral Festival March 1 at FDMS
February 21, 2014, Fort Dodge, IA- The first annual Fort Dodge Choral Festival will take place on Saturday, March 1, at the Fort Dodge Middle School Auditorium. This event offers students a non-competitive choral experience working with a highly acclaimed choral clinician and performing in a festival concert.
The festival will bring together four high school concert choirs from the Midwest: the Fort Dodge Senior High A Cappella Choir, the Cedar Falls High School Concert Choir, Woodbury High School Concert Choir (Woodbury, MN) and the Bellevue East High School Concert Choir (Bellevue, NE). Each of the choirs will participate in an hour long clinic with the guest clinician, Dale Warland, before performing in a festival concert at 12:30 p.m. In addition to the high school choirs, the festival concert will also feature the Central College A Cappella Choir.
During his time with the Dale Warland Singers, Warland shaped a vocal ensemble known for its exquisite sound, technical finesse, and stylistic range. From that platform, Warland commissioned over 270 new choral works. The music world bestowed its highest honors on Warland, the most recent including induction into the Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2012, the Weston Noble Award for Lifetime Achievement in Choral Music (2010) from the American Choral Director’s Association; the Cultural Leadership Citation Award from Yale University (2010); the Robert Shaw Award in Choral Music (2007) from the American Choral Directors Association. Since the closing of the Dale Warland Singers organization Warland has continued to remain active as guest conductor, composer, teacher, and producer of choral programs for public radio. Warland is a graduate of FDSH.
“This is the first annual Fort Dodge Choral Festival,” said Matt Drees, FDSH vocal music instructor. “It is designed to showcase the beauty of the choral art for our students and community by bringing in high level concert choirs to perform together in a non-competitive environment.”
In addition to the clinics with Warland, Dr. Therees Hibbard from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, will work with the Fort Dodge Middle School Honor Choir, the FDSH Women’s Choral, Dodger Men’s Chorus and Vox Femina.
Tickets for the festival concert are $5 each and will be available at the door. The schedule for the concert is as follows: Fort Dodge Middle School, Cedar Falls High School, Bellevue East High School, Woodbury High School, Fort Dodge Senior High A Cappella Choir, and the Central College A Cappella Choir.
