May 14, 2013

May 14, 2013, Fort Dodge, IA-  FDSH seniors Chase Smith and Emaria Hickey participated in the National DECA Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California, April 23-28. The students qualified at the state DECA conference.

Smith competed in business finance marketing and Hickey in quick serve restaurant management. Each student was required to take a 100 point exam and complete two role plays. The business finance category covered concepts in the finance career cluster and the quick serve restaurant category covered concepts in the hospitality and tourism career cluster.

DECA’s program of leadership and personal development is designed specifically for students enrolled in marketing, management and entrepreneurship education. The organization provides members with opportunities through professional conferences, competitions, chapter activities and school and community improvement projects.

At the conference students heard from keynote speaker Steve Greenbaum, CEO of PostNet and participant in the television show Undercover Boss. They also observed a fashion show hosted by students from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Students networked with the over 14,000 students from around the nation and made time for some site-seeing.
