The 3rd Grade pod at Duncombe Elementary hosted a family engagement event as they finished their unit on the sea. Students have been studying the sea through the lens of an artist and scientist. They have been able to look at different pieces of art and learn how artists would depict the sea through their own experiences.
They also were able to learn about why and how explorers study the sea and sea creatures. They have used informational texts, research reading, and the studying of a variety of pieces of artwork to build their knowledge.
Not only have the students become experts on the sea and what researchers find in the sea when they explore, but they have also learned how to ask curious questions and use the skills of notice and wonder.

Last year, Ms. Drees, Nurse Williams, and Ms. O'Leary became certified American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) instructors.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Fort Dodge Community Schools Foundation, they were able to purchase 14 adult, 2 child, and 2 infant Manikins, along with 12 AED trainers. All of the Manikins and AED trainers are Bluetooth compatible, which gives instant feedback on hand placement, depth, recoil, rate of compression, and ventilation. The Bluetooth compatible AEDs allow the instructors to modify the scenarios from a smart device.
Over the last few weeks all of the students in Basic Athletic Training and Ms. Pratt's Medical Procedures class went through CPR training. Another set of students signed up for an evening class. Overall, 40 students were trained in BLS and 24 of those students chose to go through with testing and are now AHA BLS certified.
