Children in Kindergarten – Third Grade for the 2024-2025 school year were able to participate in the Pick a Better Snack Program. This aims to help children eat more fruit and vegetables. Ms. Erica from Webster County Health Department taught 30-minute interactive lessons once a month where children learned why fruits and vegetables are so good for their bodies, where and how these foods grow, and tasty ways to eat them. Lessons include tastings, education, and fun interaction to familiarize children with the foods they eat: - Students sampled zucchini “zoodles” with marinara sauce and learned what can be grown in Iowa in the summer. - Students compared two apples from the Community Apple Orchard and learned about plant parts and how plants transform from seed to fruit. - Students sampled sweet potato fries and learned about root vegetables - Students sampled kiwi and learned how they need support to grow from a trellis or other system. They tasted the fruit with skin on – Did you know it is high in fiber and nutrients? - Students sampled canned chickpeas with tajin and learned that seeds need water and warmth to sprout. - Students sampled pineapple smoothies and learned how far our food needs to travel when we cannot grow it in Iowa. - Students sampled raw sugar snap peas and learned that peas grow in pods and, like many other plants, also need support to grow. - Students sampled canned peaches with cinnamon and learned about pollination and how plants and animals help each other. - Students sampled spinach and fruit tacos and learned that leaves help make food for the plant through photosynthesis. We hope your children enjoyed exploring new fruits and vegetables and brought home what they learned. The Pick a Better Snack Program is brought into schools via SNAP-Ed funding through Iowa Health and Human Services.

The Fort Dodge Community School District is pleased to announce Marta Paukert as Fort Dodge Senior High Assistant Principal for the 2025-2026 school year. Paukert brings eighteen years of experience as a 9–12 Professional School Counselor to her new role. She spent thirteen years serving students in Eagle Grove before spending the last five years in Webster City. Her experience in secondary education and student support services positions her well to contribute to the continued success of Fort Dodge Senior High. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Northwestern College, a Master of Science in School Guidance and Counseling from Buena Vista University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Iowa State University. Outside of her professional life, Paukert enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her two dogs, Lucy and Nova. With her own children now grown, she and her husband are embracing their new chapter as empty nesters by hiking and kayaking. Marta plans to train for more half marathons in different states and find moments to read for enjoyment. “I’m excited to start this new chapter and look forward to learning what it means to be a Dodger,” Paukert said.

This year, Fort Dodge Middle School was fortunate to receive a generous donation from National Gypsum as part of their November Giving campaign. The donation was generously contributed in equal amounts by two National Gypsum facilities - $17,500 from the Quarry Plant, led by David Gollob and $17,500 from the Gold Bond Plant, led by Mark Dyer. Their incredible support helped fund the creation of a Health Occupations Lab, providing our students with access to valuable hands-on learning tools. Thanks to their contribution, we were able to purchase two hospital beds, two adult mannequins, multiple adult and infant CPR training kits, an ECG simulator, a wound packing arm trainer, walkers, wheelchairs, medical machines, and a variety of other healthcare-related materials and supplies. Students at FDMS will now have the opportunity to explore careers in healthcare through meaningful, real-world experiences in our Health Occupations exploratory courses. Mark Dyer and Dawn Grove from Gold Bond Building recently visited the Health Occupations Lab at Fort Dodge Middle School. FDCSD is grateful for their investment in our students! #proud2bFD
