Señora Ketcham's Spanish 2 class recently made ofrendas to celebrate Día De Los Muertos. Students learned about the Mexican culture and celebration of Día De Los Muertos, as they created ofrendas to honor a loved one who has passed away. Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow visited Fort Dodge Community School District today to observe our district programming, highlighting new initiatives in our district. Director Snow started at Fort Dodge Middle School where she visited with Mrs. Whittington, Health Occupations Teacher. Mrs. Whittington spoke about her career path and how she helps students understand the career paths available to them in the healthcare field. The group then traveled to the trades classroom to learn how that will soon be utilized. Students will be able to take Trades and Manufacturing classes where they will learn skills such as carpentry and cabinet making. The visit at the Middle School concluded with a stop in Mrs. Bockelmann’s Family and Consumer Sciences class. The students had made a snack and drink for the group and they learned how students get hands-on experience with culinary arts, sewing, and nutrition. The second stop on Director Snow’s visit was to Duncombe Elementary where students greeted the group and led them to the 1st grade pod, where classes were involved in 95 Core curriculum which is foundational skills instruction in literacy. Students were learning about closed-syllable patterns where the vowels say a short sound The group ended the visit at Early Childhood Center by observing Kindergarten PLC. PLC is a Professional Learning Community where teachers gather weekly to discuss student skills and how to best support them in their learning. We would like to thank Director Snow for taking the time to visit FDCSD and see how our initiatives are positively impacting our students and staff district-wide. Additionally, we would like to thank Ann Meyer and Tim Kraayenbrink for joining us at the Middle School and Duncombe Elementary. #proud2bFD

The Fort Dodge FFA Chapter recently traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, to attend the 97th Annual National FFA Convention and Expo from October 22-25. Six FFA members, including Nat Christensen, Mason Eastwood, Emma Lloyd, Kylee Thackery, Grace Winkel, and Gabby Waldschmidt, were accompanied by their advisor, Mr. Ben Hennessy, to engage in a variety of activities aimed at expanding their agricultural knowledge and leadership skills. The group kicked off their experience with a tour of Conner Prairie, a historic farm and museum that re-creates 19th-century life along the White River. A memorable part of this visit was the opportunity to ride in a hot air balloon, offering a unique perspective of the historical landscape. Later that day, the group explored the convention hall, familiarizing themselves with the venue. On Thursday, the members attended the convention's opening session at Lucas Oil Stadium, where they heard from keynote speakers, including Kanyon Huntington, a National Officer from Iowa. Following the session, they spent the day exploring the Career Fair and Expo, participating in workshops, and networking with FFA members from across the country to bring fresh ideas and inspiration back to their chapter. After a successful convention, the group returned to Fort Dodge on Friday, excited and motivated to apply what they learned and already looking forward to next year’s National FFA Convention. 🔴⚫ #proud2bFD
